Moat Island Glamping site was one of our first full design and build projects, and is where we built our first natural swimming pool. The site was originally a mix of woodland, open lawns and a silted up pond, all on a wet marshy area. For this project I designed the site layout and planting plan, where the space was broken up into individual areas for pitches screened by willow, alder and reed planting, with other areas left to rewild for privacy and wildlife. The pitches were situated using the principle of prospect and seclusion – a design method that taps into our instinctual minds of wanted to feel enclosed with vegetation around us, and excited with views out in front. I carried out the initial designs for the outdoor kitchen, with open fronts on two sides for an enclosed, yet outdoor feel. A design and access statement was also produced, in order to obtain planning permission, which I developed alongside the site manager and owner.

As a team, we went on to build the natural swimming pool, building up levels on the site using the spoil – which provided drier ground. We dredged out the silt from the existing clay lined pond, and used this fertile soil to build mounds for hedge planting. Level pitch areas were created within the new planting, and bridges were built over the existing pond and ditches. This was an amazing project to carry out, and it really has settled so well into the landscape these years on.
